Hello April!

Yay spring! Daffodils, cherry blossoms, birds chirping – they all bask with us in balmier temperatures and longer daylight, and hope is in the air.

We've got lots of spring fun for you in this issue of Washington Parent. We'll help you find the best outdoor playgrounds, places to go crabbing around the DC area and where to feast on Chesapeake Bay crabs, programs at local public libraries where the kiddos can read with dogs and where to find theaters with sensory-friendly accommodations for your kids who need them to be able to experience all the wonder of live performances!

And of course you're thinking ahead to camp, so we're sharing ways for divorced and blended families to make summer camp smooth, and how to talk to your kids about choosing healthy food at camp this summer.

We haven't forgotten family health. Learn from a pediatrician what you need to know about both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in children. And if you're pregnant, we've got solutions to overcome common issues that can get in the way of you getting a good night's sleep, as well as some tips for using mindfulness to stay centered during a very change-loaded time. Mental health is, as always, a foremost concern for parents and Washington Parent covers the many aspects of this year-round. This month a parent educator talks about the challenges families face addressing the defining force of phones in their lives and offers guidance on how to "dial down screen usage and turn up connection."

For Earth Day, April 22, check out our story on how to green your family fitness routine, ditching all the plastic and where to find eco-friendly fitness gear in the DMV. And find out how your kids and teens can help our climate through local volunteer opportunities.

Washington Parent's April issue also features a look at microschools – what they are and why more parents are choosing them. In addition, thinking a lot about finances is an everyday undertaking for parents, so in our April More for Moms & Dads department a local legal expert on estate planning lays out what you need to do to protect your family's future.

Finally, April is National Humor Month, and there's nothing like a good laugh to promote wellbeing, so check out the What to Read department in this issue to find books for tots to teens that tickle the funny bone!
