Enjoy a little more summer fun before back-to-school readiness begins!

Summer in the DMV is far from over, and there's already plenty on the horizon to carry families straight through the start of the new school year. This stretch is a little bit history, a little bit science fiction and a little bit first-day-of-school prep.

See George Washington's Original Clothing

During the nation's 250th birthday, Mount Vernon is offering a once-in-a-lifetime look at garments George Washington actually wore — a red wool waistcoat on loan from the New Hampshire Historical Society, plus a white cotton-and-linen waistcoat with breeches and a blue wool coat from Mount Vernon's own collection. Together, the pieces offer a glimpse into Washington's personal philosophy on dress, on view for a limited time only.

  • Now through July 26, Donald W. Reynolds Museum & Education Center, Mount Vernon, VA

Teddy Bear Clinic

Kids are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal in for a checkup at this free, hands-on program built around the body, physical fitness and healthy habits. Recommended for children in PreK through second grade, it's a gentle, playful way to ease young kids into routines, new environments and a little independence right as the school year gets underway.

  • 9:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 19, National Museum of Health and Medicine, 2500 Linden Lane, Silver Spring

Smithsonian Starstruck: An Immersive Experience

Developed with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, this roughly hour-long experience straps small groups into wireless VR headsets for a 40-minute, free-roaming journey from a real observatory out to the Sun, a supernova and beyond, narrated by a virtual guide and built from real telescope data. It's an immersive way for older kids and teens to experience astronomy up close, though the headset fit and shared physical room mean it skews toward tweens and up rather than younger children.

  • Now open, Fever Hub, 926 F St. NW, Washington, DC
