Pig races, horse racing, butterfly encounters, live concerts and 145 years of tradition — here's everything you need to know before heading to the Maryland State Fair this summer.
The fun doesn't stop after the country's 250th anniversary; the Maryland State Fair is celebrating its 145th anniversary this summer. This classic American summer experience is an opportunity to form long-lasting memories and bring families closer together.
Why families will love it
Kids will love classic carnival rides like the teacups, merry-go-rounds and the Ferris wheel. Ride credits can be purchased at the fair, but wristbands can be purchased in advance and give access to unlimited rides.
Attendees can also watch the 4-H and Open Class competitions to see some of the most beautiful animals, interesting art and scientific talents in the state. Some more novel categories include expressive arts, mechanical sciences and engineering.
Arts and entertainment are not limited to the competitions, however. Attendees can watch blacksmiths, glass blowers and wood carvers at work as they turn simple materials into great works of art. People strolling through the fair may also have a chance to catch a "Strolling Piano" performance or a magic show.
Kids who like animals can connect with them throughout the fair, not just at the competitions. They can stroll through a magical butterfly encounter, take in an educating and exciting otter show or watch pigs race at the Swifty Swine competition.
People looking for a more thrilling way to connect with fair animals can do so on the track at one of the state fair's horse races. The event is free to watch, but off-track betting is available nearby. College students can also bet on the races for a chance to win $1,000 scholarships. Attendees can also stop by the rodeo to see bull riding and barrel racing.
Music lovers can also attend one of the state fair's summer concerts. Music styles vary from the indie rock of Congress the band, to hard rock group Clutch and kid-friendly Pop Princesses and K-pop Dance Party shows. Ticket prices for these events vary but max out at $50 per person.
