Enjoy a little more summer fun before back-to-school readiness begins.

The last few weeks before school bells ring don't have to feel like a countdown to homework and early bedtimes. This August, the DMV is serving up three very different ways to soak up what's left of summer — one for families chasing the freshest kicks, one for anyone who's ever wanted to watch the sky fill with giant glowing balloons and one for the fast-paced families who love a bit of adrenaline. Here's where to be before the backpacks come out.

Sneaker Con Washington, DC

The self-proclaimed "Greatest Sneaker Show on Earth" is back in the District for a full weekend of buying, selling, and trading. Expect 100,000+ sneakers and collectibles from 200+ vendors — Jordans, Travis Scotts, SBs, vintage tees, and more — plus free on-site authentication so buyers can trade with confidence. The Cash Out Crew will be making real-time cash offers for anyone looking to clear out a closet, and Streetwear Alley, stage games, giveaways, and surprise guest appearances round out the weekend. It's a hit with tween and teen sneaker collectors, and a solid excuse for a family outing downtown before the school year starts.

Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, DC

History is being made on the National Mall: this is the first-ever NTT INDYCAR SERIES race held in the nation's capital, and it's part of the official America's 250th anniversary celebration. Current INDYCAR stars will race a 1.7-mile, seven-turn street circuit that winds past the Washington Monument, U.S. Capitol, and National Archives — a course unlike anything the series has run before. Saturday brings an IROC exhibition featuring racing legends like Jeff Gordon and Helio Castroneves in identical vintage Firebirds, plus a free autograph session. Sunday is race day, broadcast live on FOX. General admission is free, with kids' zones planned to feature interactive Smithsonian exhibits and racing simulators — a rare chance for young motorsports fans to get this close to the action.

DC Hot Air Balloon Festival

Rosecroft Raceway lights up for two nights of giant hot air balloons, live music, food trucks, and family-friendly fun — with tethered hot air balloon rides available for anyone ready to check "float above the DMV" off the bucket list (rides sold on-site during the event only). Each night builds to a 9 p.m. Balloon Glow & Laser Light Show, with giant glowing balloons synced to a high-energy soundtrack and a countdown that gets the whole crowd involved. A portion of proceeds benefits local special needs organizations.
